Five people died and four others were injured as a blaze gutted an apartment building in Kuwait on Monday.

Kuwait News Agency reported that the fire took hold in a five-storey building in Al-Salmiyah.

KUNA quoted the fire department as saying that firefighters rescued nine people including the five who died from their injuries at Mubarak Hospital.

It added that all the deceased were Asian expats while the others who were rescued are described as being in a stable condition in hospital.

KUNA said the fire broke out on the fourth floor of the building.
