Dubai’s state-owned utility said on Tuesday it has started the commissioning of a 329-kilometre power cable network in the Muhaisna area in Dubai at a cost of 366 million dirhams ($99.6 million), reported state news agency Wam.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) said the network would link the first new Muhaisna transmission station with the distribution grid and other transmission substations, according to the news agency.
The network would cover the Gardens, Golf Club, Dubailand and parts of the Warsan area, Dewa said.
Last month Dewa said it would require capital expenditure of $19.1 billion between 2008 and 2012 to keep up with demand for power and water spurred by the emirate’s booming economy and rapidly expanding population.
The utility was planning to sell as much as $2.5 billion of Islamic bonds to fund expansion, but postponed the sale late last month due to rising borrowing costs and expectations the UAE will revalue its dollar-pegged currency.
