Egyptian oil major takes on new IP-based network connectivity

Spread of IP-based networks in oil industry continues as companies look to improve their IT security and reliability.

Egyptian company, Enppi is the latest oil major to adopt IP-based network connectivity as part of its recent expansion plans. The contract to develop the network was awarded to Orange Business Services.

“The initial project will ensure a secure, flexible and reliable network to Enppi, connecting its headquarters in Egypt, to a partner’s IT centre in the Netherlands,” said Ahmed Hamzawy, Orange’s general manager in the UAE.

Phase one will be operational by May 2007, with phase two due for completion by the end of the year. This will include new connections in Bahrain, Kuwait and Venezuela.

“We want our service to Enppi to extend to other countries,” added Hamzawy. “For example, another network to Saudi Arabia is currently in the initial stages, and we believe Enppi’s operational costs will be reduced when the network is installed. Our aim is to position Enppi to serve its market more competitively.”

Hamzawy said more oil companies are turning to IP-based networks because they provide a secure and reliable connectivity, which the internet cannot. “The internet is not a realistic long term solution for business customers with real-time applications. Enppi requires security, end-to-end monitoring and single point service management and troubleshooting. All of these needs can be met with our IP services,” he said.

He added that Orange’s multi-protocol label switching-based network platform is an investment for the future, citing the benefits for a range of activities from adding new sites, to implementing a voice-over IP solution.

“Enppi has been under tremendous pressure from Aramco to implement the project and start managing it immediately,” added Hamzawy. “We faced a huge challenge to establish an international infrastructure in such a short time frame, but managed to deliver ahead of schedule.”
