General Electric has recently won contracts to upgrade gas turbines and compressors at Abu Dhabi’s Asab Gas Development (AGD) gas re-injection plant, and supply reactors to a new Kuwaiti refinery, the company announced recently.
AGD is owned by Adnoc and managed and operated by Abu Dhabi Gas Industries (Gasco).
The new technology will significantly increase processing and production capabilities at the plant, which is being designed to produce 6,200 tonnes per day of natural gas liquids (NGL) from the Asab gas field.

Under the scope of GE’s contract to expand the plant’s capacity, the gas turbines will be upgraded to MS5002D models, which offer increased efficiency.
The new machines also are equipped with new Dry Low NOx combustion systems that reduce NOx emissions across a broad operability range.
In the past few years, the UAE has embarked on a massive, multi-billion dollar program of investment in its natural gas sector including a shift toward natural gas-fired power plants and the transformation of the Taweelah commercial district into a natural gas-based industrial zone.
Much of the natural gas development in the UAE itself involves the extraction of natural gas liquids (NGLs) and reinjection of the gas to maintain pressure in oilfields.
The UAE’s largest reserves of gas—198.5 trillion cubic feet of it are located in Abu Dhabi Recently, GE also supplied 12 fixed bed reactors for a new refinery project developed by the Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) in Al Zour, Kuwait.
When completed in 2010, the new Greenfield facility will be the largest refinery in the Middle East, with a capacity to process 615,000 barrels per day of Kuwait export crude oil.

In Abu Dhabi, the non-associated Khuff gas reservoirs beneath the Umm Shaif and Abu al-Bukhush oil fields rank among the world’s largest.
The UAE is increasing its gas use.
