Jordan’s NRA nears oil shale deals

Natural Resources Authority says deals could help meet one third of kingdom’s daily energy needs.

Jordan’s Natural Resources Authority (NRA) is nearing agreement with two international energy firms to extract surface oil shale in the kingdom, its head, Maher Hijazin, said on Monday. The project is intended to produce almost 50,000 barrels of oil a day, Hijazin confirmed to the Jordan News Agency.

Hijazin added that he expected the NRA would reach separate agreements with the Jordanian-British Jordan Energy & Mining Ltd. (JEML) and Estonia’s Eesti Energia ‘within two months’.

He said feasibility studies carried out by the two firms had estimated total oil that could feasibly be extracted amounted to about 50,000 barrels per day or around 35 percent of the kingdom’s daily energy needs, 36,000 barrels of which would be produced by Eesti Energia, the rest by JEML.
