Qatar signs agreement to supply Poland with LNG

Polish monopoly PGNiG will receive 1 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas annually.

Polish gas monopoly PGNiG has signed a framework agreement with Qatar ‘s Qatargas Operating Company on liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies starting in 2014, PGNiG said on Wednesday.Qatargas will provide PGNiG with around one million tonnes of the super-cooled gas annually via tanker shipments, as state-controlled PGNiG moves to diversify energy imports and break its dependence on Russian deliveries.

The issue of Poland’s gas supply diversification intensified after the row between Ukraine and Russia over prices which resulted in reduced gas deliveries to some eastern and southern European states.

Despite a resolution of the dispute, PGNiG says Poland still receives only about 76 percent of its contracted gas from Russia since RosUkrEnergo – the intermediary transporting Russian gas to Poland – was sidelined when Kiev and Moscow settled the row. (Reuters)
