Saudi Arabia, world’s top oil exporter, will supply an extra 1.74 million barrels of crude to Reliance Industries, owner of the world’s biggest refining complex, for February, a source with knowledge of the deal said.

“Saudi Aramco will supply additional 60,000 barrels per day (bpd) oil to Reliance in February,” the source said. “Saudi normally meets requirements of its big customers even at short notice.”

Reliance has an annual contract to buy 235,000 bpd from Saudi Aramco for its refining complex capable of processing 1.24 million bpd of crude.

It is not immediately clear why Reliance is seeking the extra barrels. Many refiners across Asia are asking for additional Saudi crude as they seek to reduce their dependence on Iran because of tighter sanctions, but Reliance stopped buying Iranian oil last year.
