The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced the initiation of the formation of its operating subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company.
A wholly-owned ENEC subsidiary, Nawah has been mandated to operate and maintain Units 1 to 4 in Barakah in adherence to the highest standards of safety, security and quality, news agency WAM reported.
The board members of Nawah include chairman Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak and Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi as vice chairwoman.
The board of directors of Nawah will govern the performance of Nawah Energy Company, ensuring that the company’s senior leadership team is accountable for the safe, quality-driven and reliable operations of the power plants, WAM said.
“The launch of ENEC’s nuclear operating subsidiary is a significant milestone for the UAE peaceful nuclear energy program,” said Al Mubarak.
“As a world-class nuclear company, Nawah will safely operate the Units 1 to 4 in Barakah; this enables a higher level of focus in our work and an increased momentum towards the safe and quality-driven construction, commissioning and operations of the four units in Barakah.”
“ENEC will focus on the strategic growth of the nuclear industry across the UAE, its responsibilities as project owner of Barakah and shareholder of Nawah, as well as the safe and quality-driven delivery and commissioning of the Barakah project,” added Mohamed Al Hammadi, ENEC CEO.
According to WAM, the board appointed Mohammed Sahoo Al Suwaidi as the acting CEO of Nawah, having previously worked at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC).
Nawah will be responsible to continue the process to obtain the approval of the operating licences from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).
ENEC said in April that the project at Barakah is progressing steadily – Unit 1 is now more than 87 percent complete, Unit 2 is 68 percent complete, Unit 3 is 47 percent complete and Unit 4 is 29 percent complete.
Overall, construction of Units 1 to 4 is now more than 62 percent complete. Pending regulatory approval, the four units in Barakah are scheduled to be delivered by 2020, providing nuclear energy to the UAE grid.
When the four reactors are completed, the UAE’s peaceful nuclear energy programme will provide approximately 25 percent of the UAE’s electricity needs and save up to 12 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
