ConvaTec, a manufacturer of ostomy and wound care products, has announced the US availability of the ConvaTec Moldable Technology line of ostomy skin barriers, designed to offer improved protection of the skin surrounding the stoma. ConvaTec Moldable Technology skin barriers are available on the company’s SUR-FIT Natura ostomy system. They will be made available in four sizes in the US and Europe over the next several months.
“The ConvaTec Moldable Technology product line is the result of our passion to support people living with an ostomy,” says Nino Pionati, ConvaTec senior vice president, global marketing and business development. “We know that every stoma is unique, and this new technology allows the user to custom-fit their ostomy appliance to the individual shape of their stoma.”
According to a study of more than 200 people living with an ostomy, 45%of ostomy patients suffer from a peristomal skin disorder, of which 77% could be related to contact with stoma effluent. A close fitting skin barrier reduces the chance of waste coming into contact with the skin, which may result in skin breakdown.
“When we first envisioned this product, our goal was to create a system designed specifically to the needs of our customer,” says Pionati. “Ostomy nurses and patients provided input that we used in the development of the ConvaTec Moldable Technology line. We believe that through this important partnership, we have developed the most flexible and patient-friendly ostomy line in the marketplace today.”
In developing Moldable Technology, ConvaTec says it set out to create a better-fitting skin barrier that provides a close match to stoma size and shape; adapts to the ever-changing shape of a stoma; requires no tools or accessories to aid in fitting; and provides improved skin protection. ConvaTec is a Bristol-Myers Squibb Company.
