Up to 10 labourers collapse from heat exhaustion every day in the summer, senior paramedics told 7DAYS newspaper.
Dubai Ambulance will visit workers’ camps this summer as part of a new project that will provide relief packs for labourers. The packs will include vitamins, nutrients and first aid kits, which will be distributed between June and September this year.
“Heat exhaustion is a major problem in the summer, we have five to ten cases each day among labourers,” said Mariam Al Baloushi, head of public relations at Dubai Ambulance told the newspaper.
Workers in the UAE have a three-hour break around midday during the summer months, as temperatures soar to the high 40s.
“The idea for this project came after we visited a construction company last summer and we realised that labourers are not aware of the dangers nor ways of avoiding heat exhaustion,” Al Baloushi said.
“Many workers do not even know that mineral tablets exist and can be used to save lives,” he added.
The Dubai Ambulance team, who will be able to speak several languages, including Hindi and Malayalam, will initially carry out a study of ten companies before looking to reach more during the summer.
