MoH develops KPIs for government hospitals

The UAE Ministry of Health (MoH) has developed a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) to help it monitor the quality of healthcare services in the country.

The UAE Ministry of Health (MoH) has developed a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) to help it monitor the quality of healthcare services in the country. The KPIs are one part of a wide ranging strategy to change the way government healthcare facilities are run.

Planned initiatives include the creation of a national health database; the linking of hospitals and healthcare centres via an electronic network; and development of a training programme for the ministry’s staff. Government hospitals will also be given a high degree of operational independence, including responsibility for managing their own budgets.

“The strategy reflects the ministry’s determination to upgrade services,” said Hamid Al Qatami, UAE Minister of Health. “The ministry will also focus on enhancing its regulatory role and will strive to raise the level of its high calibre scientific, technical and administrative personnel.”

The ministry says its main goals in reviewing health policy are to promote international best practices, encourage a preventative approach to healthcare and unify policies across the UAE. The role of the ministry will also change, as it focuses more on oversight and leaves the provision of services to other authorities.

“The ministry should focus on developing rules and regulations that govern the healthcare sector,” Al Qatami explained. “Medical services will be the responsibility of the recently launched Emirates Health Authority that will operate independently at both financial and administrative levels.”
