Saudi Arabian doctors and dentists will be paid a housing allowance, or be provided with living quarters in a bid to improve working conditions in the health sector.
The Ministry of Health will begin to pay doctors and dentists up to SR50,000 ($13,300) a year if they do not get any accommodation provided, local media reports on Monday.
“This will help achieve equality between all doctors in various government health sectors and improve the work by giving the staff peace of mind and social stability,” Khaled Marghalani, Ministry of Health spokesman, told the Saudi Gazette.
The allowance is part of wider efforts to improve working conditions in the health sector and ultimately patient care.
A new pay scale was introduced for doctors in May last year. Consultants received a 30 percent increase, deputy doctors 16 percent, and resident doctors 15 percent, while specialists got 10 percent and health assistants 10 percent, according to a report in Arab News.
