The private sector in Saudi Arabia has been given six months “grace” to ensure that all its local employees are covered by health insurance, it was announced Saturday.
It is more than three years since the health ministry announced that it was making it compulsory for medium and small companies, employing 100 workers, to give local workers medical insurance – estimated to be 1.5 million Saudis.
However, the Council of Cooperative Health Insurance, which is in charge of the programme, still has to finalise a system whereby it can check all Saudi employees are covered, according to kingdom daily Saudi Gazette.
The council is scheduled to hold a meeting of its board of directors on Sunday to discuss a mechanism for electronically linking insurance companies and private companies with the council’s database.
