Dramatic drop in the number of fires in the UAE

Total of 928 fire incidents reported, leaving 12 dead and 115 injured

Fire accidents in buildings across the UAE decreased by 41 percent during the first half of 2017 compared to the year earlier period.The figure was below the targets set by the General Command of the Civil Defence’s fire safety strategy for 2017-2021, state news agency WAM reported on Monday.Major General Al Marzouki, general commander of the Civil Defense, was quoted as saying that a total of 928 fires were reported during the first six months of the year, leaving 12 people dead and 115 injured.The number of fatalities fell by eight percent and injuries by 47 percent below the targets set, he added.He said the timely response to fire accidents, the introduction of modern fire prevention technology, qualified firefighters and sustained public awareness campaigns were all factors behind the decreases.House fires accounted for 61 percent of total fires nationwide, 87 percent of which are minor, according to the statistics.
