UAE court issues community service orders in reckless driving cases

Four Emiratis and a GCC national must carry out tasks including cleaning parks and roads

Four Emiratis and a GCC national have been ordered to carry out community service after being found guilty of reckless driving.According to state news agency WAM, the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution for Community Service Measures has ordered two of them to maintain public parks, another two to clean roads and squares while a fifth must work at a petrol station.Ali Mohammed Al Balushi, Attorney-General of Abu Dhabi, called on the youth to adopt responsible behaviour on public roads and not to endanger people’s lives.He also said that youths aged between 18-30 tend to drive recklessly in the streets during vacations.Addressing this phenomenon requires the co-operation of all educational, community and media authorities, as well as security and judicial institutions, he added in comments published by WAM.He called on parents to guide their children about the dangers of not following traffic laws.Al Balushi stressed that community service penalties aim to adjust behaviour without placing people in prison so as to not affect their future and reputation. However, the prosecution will implement heavier penalties against them in cases of repeat violations, he added.
