An illegal housemaid and two men have been arrested over an elaborate scheme in which they allegedly drugged a family with sleeping pills before robbing their villa in Bur Dubai.
Lt Col Turki Bin Faris, of Dubai Police, said police will allege the housemaid, who had been employed by the family for just six days without proper paperwork, put the pills in their tea, Gulf News reported.
He said police initially received a report on August 17 that a 50-year old father, his wife and their 14-year old daughter were suffering from severe food poisoning after eating at a nearby restaurant.
After rushing to the scene, they found the mother and daughter in pain and vomiting while the father was semi-unconscious and unable to recall the last few hours.
Lt Col Bin Faris said when the father regained his focus he discovered gold jewellery and valuables had been stolen from the house and the housemaid gone.
He said a medical examination found they were suffering from the effects of strong narcotics.
“According to the medical report the pills could have caused the death of the family,” he told the newspaper.
“The father acknowledged that he had hired a housemaid who is not on his sponsorship but she used to come to his house on a daily basis to work and left at night.”
He added: “Despite the scarcity of information provided, police were able to reach her residence and arrested her with her partners.”
Lt Col Bin Faris claimed that during interrogation the housemaid admitted one of the men helped her find work with the Asian family as well as plan the crime.
The housemaid allegedly said she worked with the family and admitted putting strong sleeping tablets in their tea.
When they lost consciousness she gave her partners the signal to enter and opened the door of the villa.
The trio have been referred to the Public Prosecution.
