A book that is set in Dubai, but has yet to hit the bookshelves, has been named on the longlist for the Man Booker Prize, according to a report The National newspaper.
Irish-born author Joseph O’Neill tells a tale of alienation and heartbreak in Dubai in his novel The Dog, which has not been released yet, but makes the Booker Prize longlist because books published at any time up to September 30 were considered for the award.
Outlining the storyline of the book, the publishers Fourth Estate says, ”In 2007, a New York attorney bumps into an old college buddy – and accepts his friend’s offer of a job in Dubai, as the overseer of an enormous family fortune.
“Haunted by the collapse of his relationship and hoping for a fresh start, our strange hero begins to suspect that he has exchanged one inferno for another.
“A funny and wholly original work of international literature, The Dog is led by a brilliant entertaining anti-hero. Imprisoned by his endless powers of reasoning, hemmed in by the ethical demands of globalised life, he is fatefully drawn towards the only logical response to our confounding epoch.”
Born in Cork but now living in New York, O’Neill’s previous novel ‘Netherland’ was also nominated for Booker Prize longlist, but failed to make the shortlist.
This year’s shortlist will be announced on Tuesday 9 September.
The Dog is published on August 14.
