An Egyptian man has ruffled feathers after approaching authorities with a swan that he claimed was being used as a spy.

Officials say a man brought the suspect bird to a police station on Friday in the Qena Governorate, 450km southeast of Cairo, Khaleej Times reported.

The man told police he suspected the bird was an undercover agent because it carried an electronic device.

The newspaper said the head of security in Qena, Mohammed Kamal, confirmed that officials examined the bird and the device.

However, Kamal said the device was neither an explosive nor a spying device and was instead likely to be a wildlife tracker.

With turmoil gripping Egypt, authorities and citizens remain suspicious of anything foreign.

Earlier this year, a security guard filed a police report after capturing a pigeon he said carried microfilm, Khaleej Times said.
