Former Kuwaiti MP on the run from jail sentence

Authorities have raided the property of former opposition leader Musallam Al Barrak, who has disappeared since being sentenced to 2yrs jail for insulting the Emir

A former Kuwaiti opposition leader sentenced to two years in jail with hard labour is reportedly on the run after authorities raided his farm.

Musallam Al Barrak was sentenced in February for insulting the Emir during a speech at one of the public protests he led in 2012.

He had been on bail since July and has failed to report for his jail sentence, according to local media.

Security agencies raided his property at dawn on Wednesday, according to Al Seyassah daily.

Labourers at the farm who were questioned by police reportedly denied having seen Al Barrak for sometime.

The prominent former MP said at the time of his sentencing that jail would “not defeat” him and he would ensure the “walls of prison explode with my ideas”.

“You can jail my body but not my ideas and will,” he was quoted as saying by Kuwait Times.

Barrak, who is leader of the Popular Action Movement (PAM), and supporters also vowed to revive protests, which had quietened down in the past year.
