The ruler of Fujairah has ordered immediate measures to provide help for people affected by a blaze that swept through the emirate’s Friday Market site.

Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi made the pledge after touring the fire-hit Souq Al Juma site and inspecting the shops damaged in the blaze that broke out on Saturday.

According to news agency WAM, shop owners briefed Sheikh Hamad on the cause of fire, the extent of damage and the amount of their financial losses.

The ruler thanked the Directorate of Civil Defence for its quick response and efforts made to put out the fire, WAM added.

He issued orders to the officials at the Fujairah Government to provide assistance to people affected by the fire and to rebuild and reopen damaged shops.

According to Dubai daily Gulf News, about AED20 million worth of goods were lost in the fire that gutted 13 shops.

There were no casualties or injuries but some were treated for smoke inhalation on site.

Authorities are now reportedly reviewing fire safety standards and procedures at the Friday Market to ensure swift evacuation in the event of another blaze.
