Kuwait Airport workers on strike over unpaid wages

Cleaners at the airport not paid salaries since May, say reports

Cleaners at Kuwait International Airport went on strike on Tuesday after their employer failed to pay salaries owed since May.

The cleaners asked for a minimum salary of $200 (KD60) a month – the amount initially agreed on their contracts, Kuwait Times reported.

Their employer, a cleaning company, said it would pay the workers’ two months salary within days, but refused to comment on the delay or the required minimum salary.

Kuwait’s Manpower Public Authority has threatened to take legal action against the company if it does not fulfil its obligations towards its employees, MPA Acting Director Ahmad Al Moussa said.

Al Moussa said most labour strike that have recently taken place are due to the delay or non-payment of monthly salaries.

He said the MPA suspends the files of all violating companies and will continue to do so.

The strike is not the first of its kind to take place in Kuwait’s International Airport. The salaries of security workers at the airport were also delayed beforehand, a source told the newspaper.

The source blamed the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour for its failure to enforce an effective law that requires the companies to pay the salaries of their employees on time.
