An official from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has reportedly been accused of asking for AED10,000 ($2,722) to waive a cafe owner’s fines.
A court heard on Tuesday that the 30-year-old Emirati, who works as an inspector at the RTA, asked for the bribe in exchange for cancelling fines for illegal use of customer parking spots outside the cafe, The National reported.
It said the inspector asked a policeman to mediate between him and the café owner. The policeman, who has been charged with being a mediator, told the court the RTA official asked him to tell the owner he would cancel the fines in return for AED10,000.
The policeman then reportedly asked the café owner to give him AED500 ($136) for his mediation work.
The policeman denied the charge in court on Tuesday but and the RTA official did not attend. A verdict is expected on October 11.
