Saudi imam arrested in burglary probe

Ministry officials and police confirm arrest of mosque imam in Baha on suspicion of shop raids.

An imam in a mosque in the western Saudi Arabia city of Baha was arrested on charges of burglary, local police have said.

The Saudi man, who is 33 years old and also works as a teacher, is suspected to have been involved in burgling several shops and engaging in some other illegal activities, Arab News reported on Tuesday.

Nasser Badran, the director of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Propagation and Guidance for Baha province, confirmed that an imam of a mosque in Baha had been arrested.

“My office communicated with the police to learn of the details about the issue. If the allegations against him are proved … appropriate action would be taken,” Badran told the paper.

An imam that leads Friday prayers usually earns about $800 a month. Imams that do not lead Friday prayers earn roughly half of that sum.
