American filmmaker Michael Moore has been invited to Iran to promote his new documentary at the country’s first ever international documentary film festival, an Iranian news agency said on Monday.
The director, whose films often condemn American policies, has been asked by Iran’s Documentary and Experimental Film Centre (DEFC) to take part in the Reality Cinema festival for the screening of ‘Sicko’, his new documentary that slams the American healthcare system.
According to the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), the film examines the highly profitable American healthcare industry and compares it to free systems in other nations.
“Michael is known for having the guts to give his opinion in public, which not many people are courageous enough to do, and for that is respected by many,” the ISNA said in its report.
‘Sicko’ is Moore’s follow-up to 2004’s ‘Fahrenheit 9/11′, a $100 million controversial hit criticising the Bush administration over the events of September 11th.
The filmmaker’s ‘Bowling for Columbine’ won the 2002 Oscar for best documentary.
The festival is set to take place from 15-19 October in Tehran. Argentinean director/writer Fernando Solanas and Dutch documentarian Heddy Honigmann have also been invited by the DEFC.
