‘Project X’ due for launch Thursday

Xpress, Dubai’s much-delayed new newspaper, is due for launch – but executives say ‘no comment’.

Dubai’s new newspaper ‘Xpress’ is due for launch this Thursday, and while insiders at publishers Al Nisr say that the launch is still on, the editor and senior executives are refusing to comment.

‘Xpress’ has been in preparation for over two years under the codename ‘Project X’, and many thought it would never see the light of day.

Sources at Al Nisr Publishing, which is behind the title and also publishes the UAE’s respected Gulf News broadsheet, say that ‘it’s still set to launch on the 15th – it’s pretty much fine’.

However Nirmala Janssen, editor, and Francis Matthew, Managing Editor of Al Nisr Media, would not confirm that the launch will happen this week.

“I’m not commenting at the moment, but will be happy to speak tomorrow,” said Francis Matthew.

As ArabianBusiness.com revealed last month, Xpress is planned as a twice-weekly newspaper with a print run of 80,000-100,000.

The ‘general news tabloid’ – set to compete directly with 7Days – has forty staff and its publisher is seeking a government license to go daily.
