A company owned by the Abu Dhabi government is being sued for more than $1.4 million by a tenant of one of its luxury Mayfair apartments in London.
Rebecca Wang has brought the claim against UK-based Berkeley Square Holdings after more than $1 million of jewellery and $20,000 in cash were stolen from her home, according to property industry magazine Estates Gazette.
Wang, who was paying $9,000 a week in rent for the property, claims that the theft would not have happened if managing agent GVA Grimley had repaired or replaced a broken alarm in the property. She also claims that had the property been equipped with a larger safe then her goods would have been secure.
Owing to the age of the listed 18th-century building, it could only support a small safe so Wang had to keep the majority of her valuable items in a secure room.
Goods stolen during the raid in January included seven Hermès Birkin bags, valued at more than $74,000 a $31,000 Chanel yellow gold diamond braclet watch two pieces of Louis Vuitton luggage and four Louis Vuitton bags, collectively valued at $14,00 a $60,000 Cartier diamond ring and antique family jewellery.
Wang also claims that, following the break-in, she felt unsafe living in the building and has since lived in the Dorchester hotel at a cost, to date, of almost $400,000.
No-one was available to comment from GVA Grimley when Arabian Business called on Tuesday.
