Landlords evicting tenants to make way for Haj pilgrims

Landlords in Mecca kicking out entire buildings full of tenants to house pilgrims.

Tenants in Mecca are being evicted from their homes so landlords can rent them out to Haj pilgrims at higher rates, according to Arabic daily Al Watan.

The newspaper said landlords were evicting entire buildings full of tenants to maximise the amount of money they could make from pilgrims requiring temporary accommodation during the annual Muslim pilgrimage.

Al Watan said landlords charged pilgrims between 1,500-2,000 riyals ($400-$533).
