The managing director of Omniyat Properties has left the company by mutual agreement, Arabian Business can reveal

Alex Andarakis, chief of sales and marketing at Dubai-based Omniyat and the former head of marketing at Emaar, the largest developer in the Middle East, refused to say why he had left the company other than “it wasn’t working for me and it wasn’t working for the chairman”.

The former boss of drinks giant Aujan Industries who joined Emaar in early 2007 to oversee the group’s international marketing strategy said he was to pursue a career outside of real estate.

“In my case it wasn’t working for me and it wasn’t working for the chairman, so I took the decision to go and I’m about to go back into something other than property,” he told Arabian Business on Tuesday.

“I felt I needed a different career direction, you’ll be hearing news of me very soon. I have joined another company but I won’t disclose who yet,” he added.

He said he will start his new job in June.

Omniyat axed nearly a third of its workforce in November. A total of 69 jobs were lost which reduced the headcount from 214 to 145 as the group looked to cut costs during the downturn.

In November it emerged that Omniyat had delayed six future projects worth around AED8bn such as a hotel project at the Dubai Waterfront.

Omniyat is the developer behind projects including the cube-shaped Opus which was launched in May and is under construction in Business Bay.
