Abu Dhabi plans major shake-up of food retail sector

Senior official says sector will be modernised to deliver better service to customers in emirate

Abu Dhabi’s food retailing sector is set for a major shake-up, designed to raise quality standards, a senior official said on Saturday.

Rashed Mohamed Al Shariqi, director general of Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), said “a comprehensive plan to develop the retail stores sector” was underway, adding that more details would be announced later this year.

He said the plan envisaged “sea changes to the sector”, aimed at bringing benefits to all stake holders.

Al Shariqi added that the modernisation of the retail and grocery sector would force shops to adopt global food safety procedures “more rigorously”.

“Our initiatives for the grocery sector are aimed at further improvement in standards. Once implemented, the new standards will give the customers improved shopping experience, while the owners and operators will have better and more lucrative business opportunities,” Al Shariqi said.

ADFCA and Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development will work together to implement the proposed improvement plans for the grocery sector, he added.

A recent government study showed that there are about 1,300 grocery stores in Abu Dhabi.
