Amazon could be looking to use electric vehicles for deliveries in the region. The initiative has already been implemented in Europe and the US and could be making its way to the Middle East soon.

“We’ve been looking at the last mile, how we can utilise electric vehicles, even scooters, small bikes for delivery. And that’s something that you know, over time, we definitely want to roll out in the region,” Ronaldo Mouchawar, CEO of Amazon MENA, told Arabian Business in an exclusive interview at the Retail Summit in Dubai.

The region has different specificities when it comes to using electric vehicles for deliveries and various factors to consider including “is there really a network where you can charge these cars and vehicles? Will it give you the same distance because of the temperature? We need to solve the bid again for our region and get the region ready,” Mouchawar explained.

Amazon as a company is very committed to the pledge, he emphasised.

“We have also looked at autonomous cars with Zoox,” last month, it was announced that Amazon rolled out a test fleet of autonomous driverless robotaxis in California, using employees as passengers.

Across the US, electric vehicles have already been put to use for deliveries, and the vehicles have been designed with safety and sustainability at its core, in partnership with American electric vehicle manufacturer – Rivian.

Amazon’s net zero target

In Europe, Amazon announced plans to invest over €1 billion to electrify and decarbonise its transportation network across the region. The company has already been using thousands of zero-emission vehicles, aiming to achieve net zero by 2040.

There are multiple pillars that the company is constantly working on, “I think there’s a lot that we work on and some may work and some may not but for sure, it’s an exciting space to be,” Mouchawar concluded.
