Dubai Outlet Mall is eyeing major expansion plans as the impact of the global economic slowdown encourages shoppers to look for bargains.
A growing number of bargain hunters – up to 15,000 visitors each week day rising to 25,000 on weekends with up to 90 percent making a purchase – is behind the plan, Vishal Mahajan, the director of the first outlet mall in the Middle East, said.
“We are exploring the possibilities of an extension. When we do it, we will add a significant amount of space, at least equal to the existing phase,” Mahajan said in comments published by UAE daily The National on Thursday.
“We have been approached by a lot of retailers that have missed out on phase one to have a significant presence here,” he told the paper.
He added that visitors to the mall had doubled since it opened in August 2007.
But the Middle East Council of Shopping Centres has warned that the UAE had an oversupply of shop space with four malls opening in Dubai in the past six months, including the Dubai Mall.
Developer Nakheel announced it was delaying its $3 billion expansion plans across the country.
