It means residents on an Amazon shopping spree will have less to pay for their purchases.

Dubai Customs is reversing a decision announced in January about the threshold at which customers must pay duty.

Dubai Customs duty threshold change

Dubai Customs Notice No. 5 of 2022 concerns the clearance of consignments through courier companies. It was announced in June of last year and now applies.

It states that to accept items with a certain value shoppers must pay:

  • 5% import customs duty charge
  • 5% VAT

According to media reports in the UAE, the customs authority introduced an amendment to the rule on March 1.

An email sent by Dubai Customs said: “Kindly be informed that Paragraph (a) of Article (2) of Customs Notice 5/2022 related to exemption of consignments with value not exceeding AED 300/- has been suspended, and that it is has been decided to re-establish the previous threshold for exemption of parcels/shipments of AED 1,000/- effective 01-March-2023 until further notice.”

It means that any goods imported with a value of less than AED1,000 are exempt from paying the fee. The threshold has increased from the AED300 announced in January, effectively making products bought for between AED300 and AED1,000 cheaper.

From January 1, 2023, tobacco, tobacco products, e-cigarettes and nicotine liquids of any value are subject to 200 per cent customs and excise tax.
