Dubai Duty Free on Monday announced first quarter sales of AED1.25bn ($343m), a 13 percent increase over the same period last year.

Colm McLoughlin, managing director, said although 2010 had been an excellent year with sales of $1.27bn, Dubai Duty Free was looking to top that by at least 10 percent this year.

“During the first quarter, we have seen substantial increases in our top categories in addition to growth in other categories, all of which is extremely encouraging and we are optimistic that this year will be another record year for Dubai Duty Free,” he added.

Liquor, perfumes and gold took the top three spots category-wise in the opening months of the year.

Perfume sales reached $48m, representing a 16 percent increase while gold sales delivered a 13 percent rise to $38m, the company said in a statement.

Sales of confectionery also continued to grow in the early part of 2011 as sales rose by eight percent to $26m while sale of electronic goods grew by 13 percent to reach $25m.

Dubai Duty Free also said it had taken on an additional 136 staff in the first quarter of 2011, bringing total staffing levels close to 4,000.
