Qatar bans ‘champagne-scented’ perfume

Authorities have pulled bottles of Victoria’s Secret’s “strawberries & Champagne” perfume, as well as bottles featuring the Playboy bunny

Qatari authorities have pulled several perfumes from store shelves because they have been deemed too risqué.

Bottles of Victoria’s Secret perfume called VS Fantasies: Strawberries & Champagne were removed from the lingerie store’s Landmark Mall shop earlier this week, Doha News said.

A bottle featuring an image of the Playboy bunny, the logo of the American men’s lifestyle magazine that features naked women, also was removed from a Family Food Center store.

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce’s Twitter feed said the items contravened the “customs, traditions and religious values” of Qatar.

Two years ago, Qatari authorities also tightened regulations on the sale and import of perfumes based on alcohol, a common ingredient but which is banned in Islam.

To prevent misuse of the alcohol, it ordered perfumes be sold in bottles with a spray nozzle, that at least one ingredient be added to ensure the perfume could not be consumed and that warnings advising that the product is only for external use be added to perfume packaging, Doha News reported.

Alcohol is not banned in Qatar but is only available for sale in licensed venues attached to hotels.
