Single’s Day is the world’s biggest online shopping event, $139bn of transactions in China last year

An online shopping celebration known as Singles Day will see billions of dollars spent around the world this week.

Single’s Day is sometimes referred to by its date 11.11 and is an online shopping phenomenon bigger than Black Friday, which is popular in the US.

In 2021 China’s online shopping giants Alibaba and JD.com pushed trading to a world record $139bn in a single day. The record came amid concerns for trading in China, following sluggish performance during the pandemic and Beijing’s crackdown on technology companies.

Online shopping event comes to UAE

Such is the enormity of the online shopping extravaganza, Single’s Day, also known as Double Eleven is now celebrated around the world.

Amazon has jumped on the online shopping bandwagon for 11.11 and is offering a shoppers in the UAE a comprehensive collection of savings on well-known brands.

Amazon.ae will run its sale for a protracted period, with deals offered from November 10 to November 12.

Amazon’s 11.11 sale has online shopping discounts on electronics, fashion, home and more.

Stefano Martinelli, GCC Retail Director, Amazon, said: “We’re excited to kick off the end of year shopping season with our 11.11 sale on Amazon.ae, offering customers the chance to save as they shop deals as well as enjoy additional ways to save through banking partner discounts.”

Amazon is offering subscribers to its Prime service early access to offers as well as additional savings for members in the UAE.

Amazon is not the only online retailer in the UAE to offer 11.11 promotions to online shopping channels.

Noon and Sharaf DG will look to attract customers with online shopping deals.

Under the banner of the Mega Deal 11/11 Noon.com is advertising on toys, electronics and accessories.

Consumer electronics specialist Sharaf DG is offering up to 60 per cent off on gadgets and technology items.

Apple iPad’s, iPhones, Samsung televisions and more consumer electronics are included in the Sharaf DG sale, which will continue until November 13.

Earlier this year Arabian Business reported that three-quarters of online shoppers in the UAE will spend more this year as e-commerce rapidly grows and online shopping becomes more popular.

The UAE e-commerce market is predicted to reach $9.2bn by 2026 according to analysis by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce.

Online shopping sales in the UAE reached $4.8b during 2021, compared to $2.6bn in 2019 as Covid pandemic accelerated a global shift towards online shopping.

The study, based on data from Euromonitor highlighted several factors boosting e-commerce activity in the UAE, as well as high-potential growth opportunities.

Mobile devices were used for the majority of online shopping transactions last year as smartphones and tablets were used in the retail market to drive $2.6bn in sales, accounting for 44 percent of the total e-commerce market value.

Mobile retail sales are expected to record a compound annual growth rate of 15.6 percent over the 2022-2026 period to reach $4.6 billion.
