60% back sheikh to win Olympic medal

Despite Sunday’s disappointment, Arabian Business readers still believe Sheikh Ahmed will succeed in Beijing.

Arabian Business readers are backing sharp shooter Sheikh Ahmed Mohammad Hasher Al Maktoum to bounce back in his second event at the Beijing Olympics on Tuesday.

The UAE’s main hope of winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games failed to qualify for the final of the trap shooting competition on Sunday.

After two qualifying rounds, the former Olympic champion could manage only 30th place out of 35.

But nearly 60 percent of people who took part in our online poll on Sunday are backing him to win a medal in the double trap competition on Tuesday.

It is the event in which Sheikh Ahmed won the UAE’s only gold medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004.

And 33 percent of respondents believe he will repeat his achievement of four years ago and return home with another gold medal.

Another 26 percent say they expect Sheikh Ahmed to win a medal of some sort on Tuesday.

The UAE shooter equalled the Olympic record in the double trap four years ago but 23 percent of respondents believe he is now past his best and will struggle to even surpass his performance of 30th in Sunday’s trap competition.

Sheikh Ahmed has revealed that Tuesday’s competition will be the last time he represents his country and 18 percent of people who voted say this and his lack of preparation for the Olympics will ultimately cost him a chance of a medal.
