Kuwait pledges to issue new sports law ‘in six months’

Government calls for temporary respite of ban on Kuwaiti athletes participating in global events

Kuwait’s government has pledged to issue a new sports law within six months – required in order to lift international sanctions on the country participating in international events.

The ban was imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and world football body FIFA in 2015 for alleged government’s interference in local sports.

While the government said it is willing to discuss its years-long sports crisis to reach a solution, it added that the IOC and FIFA should lift the suspension temporarily to allow Kuwaiti athletes to participate in international events, reported Kuwait Times.

The Cabinet had accepted a recommendation by the Assembly this week calling on the government to do whatever is necessary to end the international sanctions, MP Abdulwahab Al Babtain said on his Twitter account.

As a result, Al Babtain said there would be no need to hold an emergency session tomorrow as initially requested by eleven opposition MPs on Monday to discuss legislative changes required to lift the country’s sports ban.

The government’s pledge will be sent to international sports organisations in order for them to lift the suspensions on a temporary basis until the new legislation is issued within the stipulated six months, the MP said.

The IOC and football governing body FIFA suspended Kuwait from international sports in 2015, accusing the Kuwaiti government of interference in its National Olympic Committee. The allegations prompted Kuwait to file a $1 billion lawsuit for damages in Swiss courts in June.
