Abu Dhabi has been awarded ‘Race Promoter of the Year’ by motor sport’s world governing body.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit was awarded by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) at its annual gala in Monaco.

“We are grateful to the many people and organisations in our community who helped deliver this world-class project,” Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of Yas Marina Circuit, told WAM news agency.

The trophy will go on permanent display at the Yas Hotel.

The Yas Marina track is part of a $40bn development of the emirate’s Yas Island, which also includes a Ferrari World theme park.

“What they’ve done is unbelievable,” Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said of the Abu Dhabi circuit.
