How successful was Dubai's Day Without Service Centres?

October 26 initiative sees 30% jump in internet payments to nearly $15m

How successful was Dubai's Day Without Service Centres?

Dubai's Day Without Service Centres initiative has been hailed a big success with a 30 percent jump in the use of smart channels to process government services.

The Day Without Service Centres initiative, which took place on October 26, aims to encourage customers in Dubai to perform governmental fee payment transactions through the internet rather than using call centres.

Some 36 government authorities participated, when 31,000 smart governmental transactions worth AED55 million ($14.9 million) were carried out, compared to the AED42.2 million that were made on the previous day.

The day took place as per the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, state news agency WAM reported.

Launched by Dubai Department of Finance (DOF), transactions requiring payments at customer service centres operating in Dubai were stopped for the day.

Abdulrahman Saleh Al Saleh, director-general of the Finance Department in Dubai Government, stressed the importance of constant awareness and motivational efforts by the government to promote public confidence in the smart channels and increase their use to pay fees and make governmental transactions a success.

Jamal Hamed Al Marri, executive director of the Central Accounting Sector in the Finance Department, added: "We succeeded in making available electronic payments of services that require fees payments through smartphone applications and websites, as they exceed 1,000 services provided by more than 35 government authorities, and we are currently considering the organisation of this initiative periodically to promote smart transformation, as the wise leadership has set the year 2021 as the goal to end the paperwork on government transactions."

The initiative is expected to be held annually and will be expanded across a number of days.
