Dubai-based Careem has launched a new ‘Super App’ that the company says will allow customers to move “people, things and money” through one application, the company announced on Monday.
During a Zoom-televised launch event on Monday, it was revealed that the app brings together various Careem services – including as ride-hailing, food delivery, bicycle hire and Careem Pay – together on one-platform, with a single sign-on and consolidated payment methods.
“The services on the super app are tailored to your local needs,” Careem co-founder Mudassir Sheikha said during the event. “The needs are different in every market. The needs are going to be local, and you’re going to be able to get to those services right from the super app.”
“The super app provides services across three main areas: mobility of people, mobility of things, and mobility of money,” he added.
The services that are included on the super app, according to Sheikha, include delivery and shopping, rides, bicycles, and Careem Pay.
However, Sheikha added that while the Super App is now available in “almost all” of the markets in which Careem operates, the availability of certain services is dependent on the particular market.
“The services that are available in every market are different based on the needs of the market. For example, in the UAE, services we’ll see are cars, taxis, bikes, shops, deliveries, food and bicycles,” he said. “But in Pakistan, for example, the list of services is different. We have a food service in Karachi, but not in Lahore or Islamabad.”
Additionally, Sheikha said that Careem’s ‘Captains’ will also have flexibility to determine which services they provide.
“They have the flexibility to choose between moving goods and moving people. They used to move people around, now they can move things as well,” he added. “They can be driving a car, a bike, or a delivery van.”
The super app will also have a B2B offering that is aimed at supporting businesses by adding deliveries to their services.
Earlier this week, Sheikha said that the Super App will will help further delineate parent company Uber and Careem, and their business offerings, particularly after the food delivery app Uber Eats was switched off in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt in May this year, in favour of supporting Careem’s growing delivery business.
