Tech heavyweight Apple has updated its AirPort Extreme WiFi base station to conformĀ with the 802.11n standard.
With the launch of the wireless networking solution last week, Apple becomes the latest of many vendors to release products that comply with the 802.11n wireless draft specification, despite the fact that it has yet to be ratified by the industry.
Apple said that one of the main benefits of the latest version was that it provided greater data throughput and extended the reach of wireless connectivity.
Apple claimed the AirPort Extreme delivered up to five times the performance and twice the range of the previous model based on the current 802.11g wireless standard.
Other features of the AirPort Extreme include Mimo (multiple in multiple out) smart antennas and a built-in NAT firewall. The vendor said the solution was also backward compatible with Macs and PCs using 802.11g wireless technologies.
