After iPhones, Taiwan-based Foxconn is reportedly evaluating plans to assemble the Apple iPad in India.
The Taiwanese manufacturer, a major Apple vendor, may start assembling iPads at its facility in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, The Economic Times (ET) reported.
So far, Foxconn and other global contract manufacturers have only assembled Apple’s smartphones in India.
Foxconn is seriously looking to start assembling Apple iPads out of its Tamil Nadu facility, and some rounds of discussions on the plans have been held with the government as well, the report said.
ET said its queries sent to Apple and Foxconn remained unanswered.
Industry experts said capabilities required to manufacture an iPad are similar to that of smartphones, unlike a laptop which requires more complex production facilities.
The new production will help Foxconn to gain from the India government’s production-linked incentives for IT hardware, as it increases its investments in India.
