Qatar names mobile shortlist

12 firms have been named eligible to bid for the country’s second mobile licence.

Qatar said on Monday 12 firms and consortia, including Vodafone, AT&T and Verizon Communications Inc., had been prequalifed to bid for a second mobile phone licence.

Other prequalifed firms include Arab operators Mobile Telecommunications Co. (MTC) of Kuwait, Emirates Telecommunications Corp. (Etisalat), Bahrain Telecommunications Co. (Batelco), Egypt’s Orascom Telecom and Jordan Telecom Group.

A consortium including Belgacom and Oman Telecommunications Co. is also eligible to bid, as is India’s Reliance Communications Ltd.

Qatar, home to 840,000 people with a mobile penetration rate of more than 100 %, said it aims to award the licence, which will end the last Arab mobile phone monopoly, by October.
