UAE authorities have issued a safety alert over online security amid reports of attempted fraud for users of an official government application.
The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) issued an alert on social media to assure users that the UAEPass app is safe to use and secure.
UAE Pass is an official government app, which allows citizens and residents access hundreds of services in the country via a smartphone interface and without having to use multiple usernames and passwords.
UAEPass “highly secure”
It also allows users to complete official transactions with digital signatures and also request and share official documents.
In a statement online the TDRA, the authority responsible for regulating telecommunications and digital government in the country, said: “Regarding the comments circulating on social media about alleged fraud by using the UAEPass, Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, assures you that the UAEPass is highly secure.
“TDRA stresses the importance of exercising caution when receiving any notifications or login requests.
“It is essential to thoroughly verify these requests before clicking any buttons to avoid potential fraud attempts by individuals seeking unauthorised access to your accounts”.
In a separate social media post, Digital Dubai advised people to never share login details with any other person.
It also advised caution when accepting login requests, saying official government representatives will never request details.
The Digital Dubai statement said: “Recently, a resident was a victim of a phishing attack while using an official government application.
“The fraud was only made possible as the owner enabled the fraud to take place by approving authorisation request notifications they received at times when they had not even requested to authorize any transactions.
“If you receive a notification from any application asking you to authorise access without you initiating any service or request, simply deny the request by clicking on ‘Cancel’ immediately to avoid data leaks or falling for a phishing attack.
“Also, always remember to NEVER share your OTP with any other person, as no official government or private sector representative will ask for it”.
