Virgin Mobile has teamed up with BT to launch the UK’s first broadcast mobile TV and radio service.
The Virgin Mobile Lobster 700 Mobile TV phone will offer a selection of channels over the Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) network.
“The launch of Virgin Mobile’s ‘Tellyphone’ is a real watershed, both in terms of mobile devices and the evolution of broadcasting,” said Alan Gow, managing director of Virgin Mobile.
BBC, ITV, E4 and Channel 4 will provide the content, for which there is no charge. The phone itself costs US$371 or can be purchased on a contract of US$47 a month.
The handset, which is manufactured by HTC, will launch in October, retailing through Virgin Mobile Stores, its standalone stores and via its website.
