Air Kerala, India’s latest airline based in Kerala, announced plans to begin operations in June 2025, with its inaugural flight taking off from Kannur International Airport, located at the northern part of the state.
The airline aims to enhance regional connectivity within India and eventually expand its services to international destinations, its top executive said.
“Kannur International Airport will play a key role in our operational strategy,” Afi Ahmed, Chairman of Air Kerala, said.
Air Kerala plans to utilise regional twin-engine turboprop ATR aircraft in the initial phase, gradually transitioning to narrow-body jets to accommodate an expanding network
The long-term vision includes launching international flights, positioning Kannur Airport as a central hub for connecting passengers to global destinations.
The airline received a no-objection certificate (NOC) from India’s civil aviation ministry in July 2024 and is currently working on obtaining a flying permit from the country’s civil aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
With its focus on enhancing regional connectivity and future international expansion, Air Kerala is expected to emerge as a significant player in India’s aviation landscape, targeting the massive number of expats from the state working in the Middle East and other regions.
