Dubai Airports has plans to invest in expanding and upgrading Dubai International Airport (DXB) while developing the upcoming Al Maktoum International Airport, according to a report by Arabic daily Emarat Al-Youm.
“Investing in the development of the airport, updating its infrastructure, and implementing advanced technology projects is a major priority for us to ensure its continued leadership as the number one airport in the world,” Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports said.
Projects will include “expanding capacity, new commercial partnerships, additional lounges, more transportation spaces and rearranging remote gate locations,” the report said, citing Griffiths.
Dubai International Airport to be upgraded to a ‘fully smart airport’, says CEO
The upgrades are intended to “transform Dubai International into a fully smart airport” and improve “passenger flow at all touch points.”
Griffiths also stated the “strategic goal is to ensure Dubai International Airport continues to exceed guest expectations, while we develop Al Maktoum International Airport as the airport of the future.”
He added that developments at Dubai International will provide “a model for developing the passenger experience at Al Maktoum International Airport.”

The investments will also contribute to reaching a capacity of 120 million passengers annually helping maintain Dubai International Airport’s position as the largest airport in the world, the report said.
Dubai International served 87 million passengers in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels in an “exceptional year” and “fastest recovery for a major airport.”
The airport has held the title of the world’s largest international airport for passenger numbers for the past 10 years.
