Dubai Customs inspectors have found 10kg of liquid opium, worth AED250,000 (US$68,000), hidden inside 42 ladies’ handbags.
Officials discovered the narcotics during a routine customs inspection at Cargo Village, having grown suspicious about the contents of two parcels which had arrived from an unnamed Asian country.
Destined for a western country, the parcels contained a consignment of handbags, but a manual inspection revealed a dark brown substance concealed inside the bags.
The Mobile Lab and Customs K9 Unit were called to examine a sample of the liquid substance, with tests confirming it to be opium.
The shipment has been referred to police for further action.
