A total of 112 people were killed in traffic accidents in Dubai in the first six months of 106 – a 45 percent increase from the same period in 2015, according to Dubai Police figures cited in local media.
The latest statistics show that 112 people died and 1,037 were injured in 1,472 accidents between January and June, The National reported. The figures were not immediately available from Dubai Police.
During the first half of 2015, there were more accidents – 1,526 – but fewer deaths as 77 people were killed.
Tailgating and lack of road etiquette, followed by speeding and swerving, were the main causes of deaths on the road, the newspaper reported.
“The highest number of fatalities – 27 – was a result of a lack of proper road etiquette, followed by 21 because of tailgating, 14 due to sudden-swerving and 14 because of speeding,” Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, was quoted as saying.
The UAE is reportedly planning to introduce harsher penalties for tailgating. Emirates247 quoted Al Mazroui as saying: “Dubai’s police technicians have developed advanced systems that are capable of detecting drivers who aggressively stick to the back of other vehicles on key roads.
“The Federal Traffic Council has demanded tougher penalties against those drivers.”
