Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority issued a total of 167,261 driving licences in Dubai last year, official figures released on Tuesday show.

The most licences were issued for light vehicles with a total of 131,690, followed by heavy vehicles with 15,473 licences.

The category with the least number of issuances was light bus, which had only 751 licences approved, the data said.

Sultan Abdullah Al Marzooki, director of the Driving Licensing Department at the RTA’s Licensing Agency, said: “Examiners have been subjected to several training courses approved at the highest international specifications and criteria in this regard.

He said that this meant there was a “better harmony between the test and the training syllabuses at the driving institutes.”

Al Marzooki said work is progressing in developing software for electronic programming of testing appointments which will be implemented during this year.

“Under the new system, the examinee will be able to obtain the testing appointment through multiple channels such as the e-services, contact the call centre, or visit one of the centers to obtain a specific and accurate appointment,” he said.
